Chapter Twenty-Three
Danny had spent most of the night imagining all sorts of scenarios involving Calum â the worst of which being theyâd found him dead underneath the bath with flies buzzing around his corpse.
At one point, heâd thought he could hear noises coming from Calumâs room. Something creaking, as if someone was walking across floorboards. Heâd sat up, listening. Nothing. A thought, born of paranoia: Calum had died and come back to haunt him.
Danny had often heard his brother sneaking out of the house in the early hours of the morning. Sometimes as early as 2am. God knows where he went â perhaps it was best not to know.
Rose was sitting at the kitchen table polluting the room with smoke when Danny ambled into the kitchen at ten past eight. She didnât look as if sheâd had much sleep either.
âYour brother never came home last night.â
Danny filled the kettle and switched it on. Avoided eye contact. âOh.â
âDo you know where he is?â
For one terrible moment, he thought she could see into his mind. âNo.â
âItâs not like him to stay out all night.â
âMaybe heâs got a girlfriend.â
âSomethingâs wrong.â
âHeâll be all right.â
âWhat if heâs had an accident?â
Dannyâs mind treated him to a picture of Calum being dragged across the basement floor and shoved under the bath. âTry not to think the worst all the time, Mum.â
âThatâs what Auntie May said when your father didnât come home. Told me not to worry. That he was probably held up in traffic.â
Danny made a cup of coffee. Strong and black. He needed his wits about him today. âHave you called Auntie May?â
âNo.â
âWhy donât you give her a ring? He might have gone to see her.â
Rose snorted. âNo chance. She doesnât even like Calum. God knows why. Likely because sheâs never had children of her own. Doesnât understand them.â
Perhaps sheâs just a good judge of character. âMaybe he stayed over at a mateâs house. Had too much to drink and didnât want to risk driving.â
Rose seemed to like this idea better. âYes, well, he is a sensible boy.â
Danny sat at the table and blew steam from the top of his mug. âIâm sure heâll be home tonight.â
âI hope so. I couldnât bear the thought of anything happening to him.â
What about me? Danny thought. Itâs all Calum this and Calum that. What a good son he is. Jesus Christ, if it wasnât so damn serious, it would be funny.
Rose said, âIf you ask me, this familyâs been cursed.â
A knock on the front door freed Danny from his motherâs pessimism. He opened it to find Josh looking as if heâd spent the night in a hedge fighting demons.
âYou all right?â
âI feel like shit,â Josh said. âYou gonna invite me in or leave me out here forever?â
Danny moved closer to his friend and whispered, âMy mumâs not in a very good way. Sheâs upset because Calum never came home. So tread carefully.â
âGot it.â
âNo wise cracks, okay?â
âOn my life.â
Rose seemed to brighten when she saw Josh. âHello Josh.â
âMorning Mrs Sheppard.â
âDonât
